Ireland deports Nigerian man convicted of threatening mass m8rder and ter­ror­ist crimes in Ireland

A Nigerian man with ter­ror con­vic­tions for threat­en­ing to com­mit mass m8rder and bomb a uni­versity has been depor­ted from Ire­land. 

Sam Okwuoha, 28, who claimed to be a dec­uplet with nine identical broth­ers, was removed from the State as part of a crack­down by Justice Min­is­ter Jim O’Callaghan on for­eign nation­als involved in ser­i­ous crimin­al­ity. 

Okwuoha was among six men placed on a chartered flight that left Dub­lin Air­port on Tues­day morn­ing, July 28, 2026. 

The air­craft stopped in Rome as part of a joint Fron­tex removal oper­a­tion before con­tinu­ing to Lagos.

Okwuoha had pre­vi­ously been iden­ti­fied by Irish author­it­ies as a threat to national secur­ity.

Earlier attempts to deport him were unsuc­cess­ful after he viol­ently res­isted officers from the Garda National Immig­ra­tion Bur­eau (GNIB) dur­ing a forced removal oper­a­tion.

Dur­ing the incid­ent, Okwuoha defec­ated on him­self in an attempt to frus­trate the deport­a­tion pro­cess.

He sub­sequently became the first per­son pro­sec­uted in Ire­land for obstruct­ing the enforce­ment of a deport­a­tion order. 

In  court, Okwuoha chal­lenged the pro­sec­u­tion by claim­ing he was one of 10 identical broth­ers born as dec­uplets, and that gardaí had mis­taken him for a sib­ling.

His case had been lis­ted again this week, but the court was informed the pro­sec­u­tion was being with­drawn. Secur­ity source have con­firmed he was removed from Ire­land on Tues­day morn­ing.

Okwuoha was con­victed in Scot­land in 2023 of a series of ter­ror-related offences com­mit­ted at Dun­dee Uni­versity between 2021 and 2022.

He was an inter­na­tional energy stud­ies stu­dent who had made advances on a fel­low stu­dent, but was rebuffed, lead­ing to a series of threats.

A jury in Scot­land found him guilty of threat­en­ing to m8rder uni­versity staff, threat­en­ing to com­mit ter­ror­ist crimes, threat­en­ing mass m8rder, claim­ing he would use bio­lo­gical weapons, threat­en­ing to behead police officers and claim­ing he had planted bombs at the uni­versity.

He also claimed he had enlis­ted the sup­port of ter­ror­ist group Islamic State to bomb the uni­versity, and said he inten­ded to launch a chem­ical attack on Dun­dee.

He was sen­tenced to 40 months’ impris­on­ment, with the presid­ing judge rul­ing that his pres­ence in the UK was “not con­du­cive to the pub­lic good” and order­ing his deport­a­tion.

Okwuoha later trav­elled to Ire­land, where he came to the atten­tion of gardaí before he was detained. 

Deport­a­tion pro­ceed­ings were sub­sequently ini­ti­ated after author­it­ies raised con­cerns that he posed a risk to national secur­ity.

On Tues­day, Justice Min­is­ter Jim O’Callaghan con­firmed that deport­a­tion orders had been enforced against six Nigerian nation­als. 

Five of those removed had accu­mu­lated a com­bined total of 35 crim­inal con­vic­tions.

 

“Our immig­ra­tion sys­tem must be rules-based and robust,” Mr O’Callaghan said. 

 

“The enforce­ment aspects of our laws, includ­ing deport­a­tion orders, are an essen­tial require­ment for the sys­tem to work effect­ively and to ensure there is pub­lic con­fid­ence in the applic­a­tion of our legis­la­tion in this area.

 

“I will take action if our laws are not upheld, and this includes enfor­cing deport­a­tions for indi­vidu­als involved in crimin­al­ity and who pose a danger to soci­ety."
