Suspects arrested as police uncover illegal baby factory

 

One suspect has been arrested after men of the Ekiti state police command uncovered an illegal baby factory located in the Ikere local government area of Ekiti State.

Disclosing this to newsmen, the state Commissioner of Police, Joe Eribo, said the command received a tip-off and arrested one Onyechi Oluwadare, 43, alongside four other suspects behind a popular hotel along Ise-Ekiti Road, Ikere-Ekiti.

“On the 24/01/2026 at about 08:30 hrs, the Command received a credible tip-off that the prime suspect, Oluwadare Onyechi, a 43-year-old woman, runs an illegal baby factory alongside four other suspects somewhere behind Inisa Hotel and Suit, along Ise-Ekiti Road, Ikere-Ekiti.”

ICE agents to be present at Winter Olympics

 

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents will be present in Milan and Cortina throughout the Winter Olympics.
 
ICE agents will reportedly play 'security role' throughout the sporting extravaganza, which begins on February 6 in Italy, the US Embassy in Rome reportedly confirmed to the Associated Press.
 
The federal ICE agents will reportedly support diplomatic security details and would not run any immigration enforcement operations.
 
However, ICE's presence at the games has sparked controversy amid growing unrest back in the United States, after agents moved in to Minnesota on the orders of the Trump administration.
The news came on Tuesday after the deaths of two American citizens at the hands of federal officers in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in less than three weeks.

Ogun State Governor, His Excellency Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, has clarified circulating reports suggesting a confrontation between him and the Council of Afobajes regarding the Awujale selection. According to official sources, these claims are completely false and misleading.


The Governor held a respectful consultative meeting with the Council of Afobajes, consistent with meetings he held in the past with the Olori Ebis that were hitherto polarized which fostered their harmonization and, through such earlier engagements, he also persuaded one of the kingmakers to withdraw a filed litigation. 

The discussions he had focused on matters of mutual concern in the interest of the progress in traditional affairs within Ijebuland.

Senegal are the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations champions after a 1-0 win against host nation Morocco in a chaotic final in Rabat.

 

The match, held at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, was decided in extra time.

 

Villarreal midfielder, Pape Gueye, scored the only goal of the game with a powerful strike into the top corner in extra time to secure their second continental title. 

Lagos government announces 18-week maintenance of Mazamaza bridge

 

The Lagos State Government has announced an 18-week maintenance programme for Mazamaza Bridge along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway, ahead of plans to demolish and rebuild the structure as part of the Blue Line Rail Phase 2 extension from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the repairs will begin on Monday, 19 January 2026 and will cover both the Toll and Service Lanes in both directions, focusing on expansion joints and other structural elements.

Osiyemi said the bridge will not be fully closed at any point and that traffic will be managed through diversions across the Toll, BRT, and Service Lanes to limit disruption.

Professors to earn extra N1.8m yearly as FG and ASUU seal new deal

 

The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have formally signed a new agreement after 16 years of negotiations. 


A major highlight of the agreement is the review of the remuneration package of academic staff in federal tertiary institutions, as approved by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, with effect from January 1, 2026.  


Under the new deal, the emoluments of university academics will be reviewed upward by 40 per cent to enhance morale, improve service delivery, boost global competitiveness and curb brain drain.

A newly commissioned US$70,000 (N54m) footbridge in Mutasa district has sparked widespread criticism and debate in Zimbabwe, after photos and cost details shared by government officials drew disbelief from residents and social media users questioning the value and scale of the project.

The Premier South Footbridge was commissioned by the Minister of State for Manicaland Province, Misheck Mugadza, who said the structure was intended to address safety and connectivity needs for a community situated near an active mining site. Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana shared images and details of the project on X, stating that the bridge cost US$70,000 and formed part of ongoing development plans for Manicaland.
