Cyber hackers defrost supermarket freezers across Europe

 Supermarkets across several European countries have been hit by suspected cyberattacks after hackers allegedly gained control of refrigeration systems, causing temperatures in freezers and refrigerators to rise and threatening large quantities of food.

The incidents, reported on Monday, November 2, affected supermarket chains in Sweden, Belgium, Luxembourg and Estonia, with some stores forced to discard spoiled fresh and frozen food.

 

One Swedish store on Monday said on social media that the temperature of its refrigerators and freezers had been set to 50 degrees Celsius, similar to the attack in France.

 

'We are aware that a limited number of stores were affected by an incident overnight, which impacted their refrigeration and freezer systems,' a spokesperson at privately held ICA said in an email.

NCDC identifies 2 suspected Ebola cases in North-East Region of the Country

 The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has identified two suspected cases of Ebola Virus Disease in the North-East region of the country.

The NCDC disclosed the development in an official update on Saturday, confirming that samples have been collected from the isolated patients and sent for laboratory testing to determine their status.

"Two suspected Ebola cases identified in north-east, says NCDC," the agency stated. The public health agency confirmed that rapid response teams have been deployed to the affected states to conduct contact tracing and implement containment measures to prevent potential community transmission.

Spain begins three days of mourning after 69 people lost their lives in train crash

 Spain's government has declared three days of mourning after the country's second high-speed rail disaster this year claimed the lives of 69 people.

Wednesday's crash occurred in the central province of Toledo, where one train struck a stationary train from behind, derailing three carriages, raising fresh concerns about the safety of the country's rail network.

Search teams with sniffer dogs continued to look for victims on Thursday morning, while cranes helped shift the carriages as police and soldiers helped pick through the wreckage. One more body was found overnight, taking the death toll to 69, according to the regional leader of Castilla La Mancha, Emiliano García-Page.

The Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, in partnership with Harmony Gardens & Estate Development Limited, is set to hold the groundbreaking ceremony for a 5,000-unit housing development in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State, on Friday, October 30, 2026

The project, which falls under the Renewed Hope Housing Development Initiative and the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Housing Programme, is aimed at expanding access to homeownership and addressing Nigeria’s housing deficit.

The ceremony will take place at Lekki Aviation Town Estate, within the Yegunda Government-Approved Resettlement Scheme, along the New Lekki-Epe International Airport Expressway, Ibeju-Lekki, at 10 a.m.

The development is projected to deliver 5,000 housing units within 24 months across three locations: Granville, The Parliament and Lekki Aviation Town.

Brazilian presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro flees to US after presidential election loss

 Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro has reportedly left the country for the United States after losing Sunday’s presidential election and refusing to comply with a Supreme Court order ⁠to hand over his passports.

Sources close to the politician’s family told news website Metrópoles that he was en route to the US. 

“The plane is in flight,” Metrópoles reported, without making clear where it had departed from.

Bolsonaro allies told Metrópoles that he would land in Florida on Tuesday afternoon and planned to request political asylum. “The Donald Trump administration has been informed,” the website added.

Allies also confirmed to the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper that he was on his way to the US, and said the escape plan had been “organized and enabled by a lawyer close to the Bolsonaro clan”.

Singer Chris Brown gets suspended eight-month prison sentence over nightclub attack

 American singer Chris Brown has avoided jail after being sentenced by a UK court on Monday after pleading guilty to a public order offence during a 2023 brawl at a London nightclub.

The singer was handed an eight-month jail sentence suspended for a year, meaning he will not be imprisoned unless he commits another offence during the period.

Brown, 37, who was wearing a black face mask and black cap when he arrived Monday at Southwark Crown Court in London, had admitted to affray during an appearance in July.

"Violence of this kind in a crowded nightclub is serious. It creates an obvious risk, not merely to the person against whom it is directed, but also to others," judge Tony Baumgartner said, handing down the sentence.

Yobe High Court sentences man popularly known as Daddy to death by hanging over death of his wife

 The Yobe State High Court-1 sitting in Damaturu has sentenced a 45-year-old man, Abubakar Musa, popularly known as Daddy, to death by hanging following the fatal assault of his wife, Ammi Mamman, in 2024.

According to NTA reports, the Yobe State Command of the Nigeria Police had arrested the convict on January 4, 2024, at the New Bra-Bra Housing Estate in Damaturu following the incident, subsequently charging him to court under the state's penal guidelines.

In a judgment delivered today, the presiding judge dismissed the not-guilty plea entered by the defendant. The court held that the defense's position could not stand in the face of credible evidence presented before the court by the prosecution team.

Nigerian man, Goodness Sokoh, jailed 21 years in UK over offenses involving minors lured on Snapchat for groo

 A UK court has sentenced a 35-year-old Nigerian national, Goodness Sokoh, to 21 years in prison following a comprehensive investigation into online grooming and multiple child safety offences.

Sokoh, residing in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, utilized a social media application under an alias to communicate with four teenage girls between October and December 2025, subsequently luring them into his vehicle by offering incentives.

According to the Thames Valley Police, the physical meetings took place in Pitstone, Buckinghamshire. Following a full trial, Sokoh was found guilty of multiple counts of serious felony assault, unlawful exploitation, and endangering minors.

During the sentencing proceeding at Amersham Law Court, Judge Catherine Tulk strongly condemned the convict's actions, telling Sokoh: “You were grooming them so that they would trust you and put themselves into danger. You thought you could do with them whatever you wanted. Not one of them wanted to have any activity with you.”
